TAST Week 4

Here's my piece for this week's TAST. I paged through Judith Baker Montano's Elegant Stitches book to find a stitch combination using the cretan stitch.

Here's a leaf shaped motif, using the cretan stitch, on a crazy quilting project I made maybe fifteen years ago.

Got some questions for my fellow TAST participants. This is my first Take a Stitch that I'm participating in. So far, I've been keeping up. Yay! If you don't have a chance to do a week, do you just skip it? Or do you just keep continuing when you can and catch up? Do you have an idea what you'll be doing with these little samples yet? TAST Week 3

I'm ahead of the game, finishing my TAST piece for Week 3 on Wednesday! Yay! I started with a piece of batik that was sitting on my sewing table for a while. I marked dots on the fabric before doing the feather stitch. On the purple I made gold French knots on the tips. My instinct is to use beads for that, but since I'll be putting it in the little book for the Sketchbook project, it's better not to use beads.

Here are two of the twenty fans that are on the family chuppah (Jewish wedding canopy) I made, finished about six years ago. Each fan is different, with each section of the fan using the feather stitch as the basis of the embroidery and beading.

TAST Week 2

Well, I got the second week of TAST done before the Week 3 was posted! This time it was the buttonhole stitch. I chose a print black and white fabric and just fooled around with the print and the stitch.

TAST Week 1

I decided to join Sharon B.'s TAST (Take a Stitch Tuesday) this year. Yesterday, I finished a little piece that I made using last week's stitch. In the same piece, I used a portion of Jenny of Elefantz's January BOM.

I also signed up for the the Sketchbook Project a few months ago. The little book is still empty. I'm hoping to get enough done for the book to make the January 31 postmark deadline. Not looking good, but I will try. I especially made the Week 1 TAST to be able to fit it in the book. I'm going to do that with Week 2 also. I'll need to look around my sewing room for some other things that I can use in the book. I don't draw or sketch, but I can glue pieces of fabric into the little book. One of the rules is that the book cannot be more than one inch thick.

First, the statistics. After deleting all spam, there were 78 comments. Five of those comments were noreply commenters who had absolutely no way of being contacted by email or by commenting on a blog of theirs. That means their profile does not have their email address in it, nor do they have a blog listed, and they did not leave their email address in the comment.

I left those comments and skipped them when I counted down to find the winners. Those people may wonder why they never get replies to any comments that they leave and why they never get an email saying "You won!" They may want to rectify the situation for the next time they leave a comment on a blog or enter a giveaway. They were "Judith Bense", "Jill", "janie", "Anita", and "Maria Kievit". Why I've been too busy to blog

The main reason:

A few weeks ago my son and I spent one very rainy morning in the Wall Street area of downtown Manhattan. We got a very foggy glimpse of the new World Trade Center.

And we each have photo proof with a famous Wall Street resident.

I've been in Miami Beach with the two little ones for over three weeks now. For the past week one cannot say "Sunny Miami Beach" at all!

I did manage to get a little relaxing sewing in and made a block for the Block Lotto blog.

Seen at a new mall

Whew, that was a long break! Let's begin again.

One of the things that I've been busy with this summer is a copyediting/proofreading course. I did the informal test yesterday and next week is the optional review lesson, so the pressure is off.

In keeping with that theme...

...first, I have to share this. We were up north for a few days last week and went to check out the brand new mall in Akko with the grandkids. It had been open for a day and a half already and we were the first ones to point out this 'typo' to the people in this store! Don't you just love it!

And, just to keep this fiber related, here's a photo update on that blanket I've been knitting. I do have some quilty type things to show. That will come eventually.

BTW, for those of you who use blogger, I wrote this post in the new interface. Had no trouble at all, but didn't notice anything too different about it, except for the layout. So, unless something goes wrong that I didn't notice, I guess I'll keep it.

Filet Crochet - Something from the past

On an international quilt mailing list that I belong to, for Jewish quilters, someone brought up filet crochet yesterday. Someone else sent an attachment with a photo of a challah cover she made with filet crochet. That prompted me to dig out my filet crochet challah cover that I made almost 30 years ago. We have several challah covers and sort of rotate using them.

Sometime during the year after we were married, we were visiting friends. I was very attracted to the challah cover that she was using and asked her about it. She said that her mother in law made several of them for the children and there's no pattern for it. After some begging, she allowed me to take it home to copy. I sat and charted the whole thing on graph paper. It is backed with a piece of brown fabric. I don't remember when the wine stains are from and I never tried to get them out. It's probably too late now, they're probably set from being in the drawer for so many years. If I would want to bleach it, I'd have to take off the backing. Too lazy.

(Still no quilting?!?!) (LOL!)

What to do with this yarn!

So, I started knitting something else with the rainbow yarn. It's called the Ten Stitch Twist and I got the pattern on Ravelry after seeing Henya of Chicken Stitches post photos of the one she's making.

I am not sure if I am happy with it. The color repeats are way too short and the stockinette looks so uneven because of it. I just don't know if there's anything that will look good with this yarn. And, it is an expensive yarn (in my opinion, anyway.) So, please, if anyone has any good ideas, help! As I said last time, I don't want to make socks.

It might just be time to switch back to quilting.

Progress update

You may think that I'm only doing knitting right now, and you would be correct. But, right on my sewing table is the quilt project that I planned to/should be working on now. The knitting so relaxing that I can't seem to pull myself away from it, for the meantime.

I finished the Summer Mystery Shawlette that I talked about last time. It went pretty quickly. Then again, it is kind of small. I guess that's why it's called a shawlette.

Last year I had started a different shawl from a rainbow variegated Schaefer Anne yarn that I wrote about buying here. Some time ago, I pretty much decided that I didn't like the way it was coming out. So, I undid the whole thing two days ago.

After - now I have 560 yards of fingering yarn in my favorite rainbow combo that I really want to make something with. While I did start on something, I am entertaining other ideas. I DO NOT want to make socks! The thing that I started, the beginning is very complicated. So far, I thought I was doing OK, but now I'm in the process of undoing part of it. The pattern writer admits that the beginning is tricky. If I get it to work out, I'll continue and take a picture.

Progress!

The Shetland Pi Shawl is finally blocked! As a reminder, the pattern came from a mystery shawl knit-a-long provided by Wendy Johnson of Wendy Knits. You can find it on her free patterns page.

This week I started a new lace shawl from more yarn in the stash. Also from Wendy Knits. It's another mystery shawl, the Summer Mystery Shawlette, and the last part was posted yesterday. I just started Part 2.

Today marks the 5th anniversary of the Carol Doak Quilting Group yahoogroup. Carol designed another fantastic anniversary block for this year. I felt like I needed to do some piecework, so yesterday I whipped up a six inch version of the block. You can get the pattern by joining Carol's yahoogroup.

In fact, you can get tons of free patterns that Carol designs exclusively for the members. It's free to join. She also gives challenges, with prizes, for using and posting photos of the blocks and BOMs (Block of the Month) that she designs for us.

You're at the 5th Blogger's Quilt Festival!

It's the 5th Bi-annual Blogger's Quilt Festival! Many thanks to Amy Ellis of Amy's Creative Side for gathering hundreds of quilters together to show some of their favorite quilts all in one place. Click on the logo above for a list of all the participating quilter bloggers.

The quilt I'm sharing this time is a quilt from the past. I made it in 1997 for my daughter's Bat Mitzvah. I prepared a bunch of white squares for the girls who came to her party to color on. Then I put them together into the quilt. The flowers, flying geese, spool and bowtie blocks all have 3-D components in them. The quilt is tied, not quilted. You can see the little white dots in some places. By now the quilt has been well used. It's been washed many times. I've even slept under it while at my daughter's home! For the back of the quilt I pieced together some scraps and appliqued the cursive letters of her name in Hebrew.

Whew! Catching up

Very busy month, April was. We survived the week long holiday of Pesach (Passover)! Both daughters and their families were here the whole time. That's 12 of us hanging out together for eight days in the same apartment. The three grandchildren and the rest of us had a great time together.

The family who lives in Northern Israel left the day after the holiday and the one who lives in Miami Beach is leaving this coming Sunday. Gradually, the others have returned to school and I'm slowly trying to catch up with things.

When I'm all alone, next week, the first thing I plan to do is block the Shetland Pi shawl! Can't wait to see how it comes out.

I also managed to sew up some batik nine patch blocks for a swap and mail them out. I love batiks and look forward to seeing the variety that I get back. They're nine inch finished size.

I also received my winnings in a giveaway of some batik fabric charms from Marjorie of the Applique Addict blog.

I'm thinking of making some smaller nine patch blocks using some of those and some from my stash and then setting them together sort of like Wanda is doing here on her Exuberant Color blog. But, maybe with a less busy background.

Right now, I've got to get back to some paperwork that I'm behind with.

Borders On

Yesterday I got the borders onto my little sample FPP mini quilt. There won't be any sewing going on for the next two weeks or so. I've got some paperwork to do and preparations for Passover to work on. Family is here and more will be coming. But, I still want to try to get that Shetland Pi Shawl blocked. If I do, I'll post a photo. Maybe tomorrow I'll get to tell you about a family event that we're having today and post a few photos.

So, I got enough of the top done to be able to send it in. It's just the middle without the borders. What you see is 8" square, without the seams. Today I'm going to try to get the borders done. I hadn't done any miniature paper piecing for quite a while, so this was fun.

Today's Progress

I went to the hardware store today (it's right across the street from us) and was given a suggestion of a heavy duty packing tape. I bought it and tested it and it seems to work on the styrofoam. Now the problem is that I won't have the time or space to do the blocking of the shawl until sometime next week. :(

I did, however, get all the pieces cut for the class sample that I'm making. Let's hope nothing happens on the way to Sunday to keep me from getting it done! I only want to finish the top, not the quilting, so the students can see it with the paper on the back.

Progress reports

So, the styrofoam that I'd been waiting for in the last post is here. I need to figure out how to attach the pieces to each other. Tape doesn't stick to it.

In the meantime, I managed to finish Lesson One (only three more to go) of the EQ7 class that ended a few weeks ago. These are the blocks that I drew and colored in.

I've been following the blog of Judy, the Virtual Quilter, for a while. Everyday she posts a new design of hers made in EQ7. It's a very interesting blog and fun to keep up with. Do you know of any other similar blogs or sites that share EQ designs, besides those related to the EQ site and the EQ blog?

Now I have to make a sample for a class that I'm hoping to teach at the workshop retreat here in the summer. I need to send in a photo of the sample by this coming Sunday! This is as far as I got:

The Pi Shawl

What you see here is the finished, not yet blocked, pi shawl that I wrote about a little while back. I'm waiting for my husband to buy me some styrofoam boards that I can put together for blocking the shawl. After that I will be using the boards for a portable design wall. I don't remember, but I think the shawl is coming out about 1.7 meters in diameter. When it's blocked, I'll measure it again.

Back when Electric Quilt came out with Version 7, I bought my first quilt design program. In the fall, I started taking the Quilt University classes that they offer for the software. Fran Gonzalez does a fabulous job teaching how to use EQ7. Last week the 2nd set of four lessons ended. I got very behind and am almost finished with Lesson 1! I thought about what would make me more likely to push ahead and get moving to work on the lessons and decided that writing about my progress might help. I would want to most more often, so I would need to keep working on the lessons so that I have something to show.

This class is called Building Blocks and here's the last block that I finished while in Lesson 1. Those experienced with EQ will laugh, but this is great for me! It's called Fancy Spools and it's made up of a four patch and Four X Variation.

Hopefully, by Sunday, I'll have more to show...

Embroidery from the past

I've left yet another empty space in my blogging. I've just been lazy. My apologies to those who keep checking. At least that's what the hit counter keeps showing.

I don't really have anything new that I'm working on that I can show you. I am plugging along on an incredibly boring knitted pi shawl. I'm too far along to let it go, so I have to finish it. I get maybe one to three rounds done in a day. It actually is progressing well and I think I have about 25 or so rounds left, with about half of them plain knit stitch only. Not too bad. Because it's all bunched up on circular needles, there's nothing that would show up in a photo. You can be sure you'll see it when it's finished!

I looked up at the wall a few days ago in my sewing room and noticed a past project (from 1999) that I would like to show you. You know how when you have something hanging for so long that it's part of the decoration and you don't notice it anymore? Anyway, Mary Corbet of Needle 'n Thread posted last week about her experience with the bullion embroidery stitch and thread twist. So, I was reminded of this project.

I guess it was about 12 years ago that a friend who was a member of a small mailing list I belong to shared some photos from her garden. One close up of a flower from the garden really grabbed me. It's called a King Protea. I felt the need to duplicate it in embroidery.

First I enlarged the photo and printed it out on a plain white fabric in order to embroider right onto it. The center is made of really long bullion stitches with straight long stitches as fillers and French knots in the middle. I used the turkey stitch to make the long green and white things (there's got to be a better, flower related, word for it) that surround the center. For the pink petals, I took a wide organza ribbon and machine zigzagged (or maybe it was buttonhole stitch, I can't remember) down all of one side of long lengths. The whole piece is about 8" in diameter.

One World One Heart 2011

I'm glad you came to visit my blog for the 2011 One World One Heart blog event. Click on the logo above to see the list of participants and information on how to join. I love couching yarns for embellishment on quilted items. I have included them in several giveaways that I have done throughout my two years of blogging. Finally a Finish: Fast Friday Fabric Challenge

It's been a while and I've finally got something finished to show. Back in October I joined the Fast Friday Fabric Challenge. I wasn't able to get anything going for the first few months, but this time I started working on an idea and didn't stop until I finished.

I decided to combine challenge #51 and challenge #52. I sort of kept the idea I had for 51 and changed the fabrics to be better suited for 52. There is no story behind it. No meaning to any of the squiggly shapes. Just what I felt like doing as I went along with no explanation as to why I did any of it, except that I do make a lot of things using the hexagon shape. If you click on the hexagon label below, most of them should come up.

Sewing machine stuff

So, my son put a plug on the machine and the motor ran when the foot pedal was pressed. But, nothing else moved. He couldn't even budge the flywheel. The first thing I thought of was that there's no oil in this thing! I looked under the machine and you can see no trace of there ever having been any grease there. Usually, when oil 'dries out' there is dusty residue. But here there was nothing. It really looked like this machine had never been used. We placed oil in a bunch of holes under and around the machine.

My son took apart the flywheel area and we put oil in there, too. After putting it together, he managed to loosen up the whole thing. And, yay, the needle was going up and down! So, I put a piece of paper in and nada. The feed dogs wouldn't stay up! There is a dial to turn for different levels of the feed dogs and when I turned it back and forth, the feed dogs came up, but when starting the machine, they wouldn't move back up after moving down.

So, I thought, great, I'll try freemotion! I took off the presser foot and stuck a piece of fabric in, started the machine, and promptly broke the needle because I pulled to hard! If I have any left to right threading needles in the house, I wouldn't have any idea where to find them. So, I have to wait until I can find a nearby place that sells them and then call a repair guy to figure out the feed dog problem. Oh, when I broke the needle, the little wire piece right above the needle that holds the thread down, also broke!

I also have a Featherweight and a regular Singer machine, but don't know where the extra needles are for those, or if those needles would even fit this machine.

My Bernina 1630 is in need of servicing, but I keep putting it off because the dealer is so inaccessible. Due to making many of the streets downtown into pedestrian malls or off limits to private cars, you can't drive up to the store anymore. They would also be able to repair this 'new' machine. I'm going to find out if they'll pick up and deliver. They didn't used to, but, you never know. Otherwise, I'll need to find out if there's anyone else in Jerusalem that will service Berninas.

You've probably been surprised that I've been posting so much in the past two weeks. Well, I've been trying to reach 100 posts so it would coincide with two years since I started the blog. And, I did it! I never knew I had so much to write about.

Titling your quilt

About a year ago I sent a message to the Quiltart mailing list asking for advice on how to decide on a title for a quilt. I received a bunch of replies and just now got around to organizing some of them to share here. I asked for permission from the people who shared the following insights, to post it on my blog.

Giving your art a title is really personal, I think.

I used to do oil paintings, and rather than give them a title relating to the subject itself, I referred to the time when the painting occurred. For example, I did a painting of my daughter leaning against a wall at Disney World. I called it October 13ththe date of the picture I took. I’m sure t confused viewers, but it was my own little inside joke.

That said, I also think a lot of art pieces kind of name themselves. I often think of a title right along with creating the piece itself.

Here’s an essay about this subject by Robert Genn, who writes “The Painter’s Keys”, an artist’s newsletter. I learn a lot from him.

As for names - usually one comes to me as I'm working on the quilt. Once I posted a photo of a quilt on my blog and asked for suggestions. The name that quilt ended up with wasn't one of the suggested ones but it did evolve from one of the suggestions.

Rarely do I start with a title, although I have been tempted at times to create something based on something I've written or someone else has written. For example, I recently wrote to another QuiltArt member about a quilt I made from remnants. After telling her where the remnants came from (boxes of stuff leftover from a dry cleaner's that does alterations), I wrote, "After the remnant rampage...." and then thought, wouldn't "Remnant Rampage make a good title for a quilt"?

If you ever read Dave Berry's columns when he was still writing them, he'd frequently come up with names for Rock bands. I would read them and think, "What a great title for a quilt."

Sometimes when I'm making a quilt, I come up with a title before I finish it. For example, I made a king-sized quilt to replace the slowly disintegrating one on my bed, and when I had about half of it constructed, I pinned it to my design wall and then sat on the floor looking at it. It was filled with wild colors and I kept thinking about how it made my heart sing. Bingo! "Wild Thing; You Make My Heart Sing," by the Troggs. In fact, I've used song titles for several of my quilts.

But look back at the paragraph above. Do you agree that "Slowly Disintegrating" could be a title, assuming the content of the quilt in some way exemplified it?

Typically, there is some part of a piece I've made that calls to me: a certain color, a fabric that elicits an image or emotion, the main idea behind the quilt, and so on--"Magenta Magic," "Illumination," "From Joy to Sorrow and Back," "A Square in a Square Squared."

However, most often I don't think of a title until I finish a quilt. I pin it to my design wall or across from my sewing table (a different room), and at some point, something comes to me that triggers a title. For example, I made two narrow pieces independently, but when I put them next to each other on the design wall, I realized that they flowed together. "Flow" is the title for the resulting diptych.

If you're muttering to yourself at this point about how easy it seems it is for me to come up with a title, my friend Floris could empathize with you. She usually can't think of a thing to title her quilts. So, she sends me photos, either when the top is done or the quilt completed, and I send her back a list of words that the quilt makes me think of. She's fond of one- or two-word titles, so I try to keep my suggestions short. Occasionally, though, my weird sense of humor gets triggered and I send her off-the-wall ones, too. Sometimes she uses just part of one of my suggestions, or my suggestions make her think of something else.

I offer this service to a number of quilters. You are welcome to join that group. It's free, but if, at any time, you find my suggestions unhelpful, then you can choose not to send me photos. A variation to this is to post your piece on your blog and ask the entire list to offer suggestions.

In the meantime, your idea to add "#5" to your "Miniature" title is fine. In fact, one QA member suggested that if you work in a series that you should begin the numbers around 4 or 5 so that if you enter the quilts into a juried exhibit, the jurors will think you're heavily into make a series.

A guy in my critique group facetiously suggested "Untitled, I," "Untitled, II," "Untitled, XVII," etc.

As a final suggestion, look for words as you read or watch TV. Search through your music and DVD collections for titles (titles are not copyrightable, so you're safe in conscripting any song or movie title). For me, I'd need to write them down, knowing I'd never remember them. Or, if there are certain words that you love (I'm a writer; I fall in love with words), write those down, too.

This is what I do to find a title for my abstract quilts. Most of my titles are a play on words, since I do enjoy having fun in my work. I pin my art quilt on the design wall and start writing on post-it-notes and pinning them next to my piece - sort of a brainstorm session with myself -
1) what is the main focus of the piece?
2) what shapes?
3) colors?
4) what does it say to me?
5) what was I thinking about when I made it?
6) is there movement?
7) does it remind me of a song?

Then I go an do something else, and usually I can come up with a name while I am doing another project. I walk by the board, sit down and see all of the notes that I have written. And all of a sudden it comes to me. My latest piece on my blog http://JamieFingalDesigns.blogspot.com/ when I first posted this, I had no idea what the title would be. But since the main focus is a square and the piece had alot of movement - it is "Square Dance."

I used to rely on a poet/friend to help with this, but she has moved and no longer available. One technique she suggested is to make LOTS of little slips of paper with words on them. Put them into a container and pull out two or three. Keep doing this until something hits you as "right" for the piece.

I have also resorted to using Bablefish (internet site) where you can put the word in as English and ask for it to translate it into another language. This could be problematic as we all have read pretty silly translations of directions, etc. which only vaguely tell you what to do in English.

Sewing machine found in garbage

Recently my husband was passing one of the familiar local huge garbage bins and spied a box on the side that looked like the shape of a sewing machine case.

He decided to check it out and, sure enough, there was a real sewing machine in there. It looks barely used, but it is old because it is made from the heavy metal (steel? iron?) that the older machines were made of. The thing is really heavy.

The Hebrew letters on the right side say "Totzeret Yisrael" - product of Israel. On the front it says "MARDIX Super IV-M". We couldn't find anything about it on google. I haven't looked for a serial number yet or anything to indicate a year. There's no manual.

I haven't tried it out yet because while the wires and foot pedal are there and there is one bobbin case, one bobbin and one presser foot, the plug end of the wire was taken off and I'm still waiting for my husband to put a new one on.

Meeting Carol Doak

One of the highlights of my trip in November was getting to meet Carol Doak, the Queen of Foundation Paper Piecing! She was teaching at a guild in New Jersey on the last weekend that I was there. It was about a 50 minute drive from my parent's home, so who could resist! I've been helping Carol to moderate her Yahoogroup over the past several years and we've been corresponding, so it was exciting to finally have the opportunity to meet in person. We spent some time at her hotel before going to the guild. I brought some of my mini foundation pieced quilts for show and tell and Carol show and telled images from her iPad! Carol is such a lovely and sweet person and I very much enjoyed getting to know her.

Carol's lecture at the guild was fantastic. She is lots of fun and funny, too! We all enjoyed her Powerpoint presentation about her quilting life and her trunk show of many quilts, especially all those wonderful minis.

One of the nicest things was that Carol gifted me with a small quilt top. It's the actual top that was made for and shown on The Quilt Show episode that featured Carol teaching her brand of foundation paper piecing. How cool is that!

If you love quilting and are a foundation paper piecer or just want to learn FPP, you must join Carol's Yahoogroup. She gives us loads of free patterns and it's one of the best groups around with a wonderful group of members.

Marking pens

One of the things that I bought during my trip to the U.S. were several different marking pens. My intention is to use them to mark the YTRR mini quilt that's still waiting to be quilted. I have extra fabric and want to test different pens. The small package, by Clover, I bought at the City Quilter. The first two on the left, I bought at a sewing supply shop right across the street from F.I.T. in NYC. The first one on the right, I bought here at the Quilt Center shop in north of Akko.

If anyone has any advice for me on their experiences with any of these markers, that would be great. As I mentioned, I plan to test them on the same fabrics that are in the little quilt top before I do anything serious with them.

Sew many sewing machines!

While in Florida, my daughter and I did some shopping on Miami Beach's Lincoln Road. We went into a most unusual clothing store. Hundreds of old sewing machines on display! There were other old pieces of textile related equipment, too. It seems that this company, All Saints, has a chain of stores in the United States and Europe and all of the stores are displaying hundreds of machines. So cool! You can see photos of the other stores by searching in the link that I gave you above.

Some quilt show photos

I've been lazy about posting. I was away the whole of last week at my daughter up north taking care of my three month old grandson and spending time with his 2 1/2 yo sister. My daughter went back to work, so this was a good chance to spend some time with them. She goes to gan (nursery school) and he's going to a babysitter now.

When I went to visit my grandson (and daughter and son in law) in Miami Beach in November, I managed to choose a great week to be there. The World Quilt show was in West Palm Beach that weekend and I was thrilled to be able to get there on Friday.

I took photos of a lot of the quilts that appealed to me and here are some of them. Remember, click on any photo to enlarge.

The next day - Part 2

On that day I took the train into Manhattan. I had big plans, a list of places to go. Didn't get to do it all. Got tired part way through and didn't have time to rest and then continue because I had to be back by a certain time in order to go to my sister in the evening. Knowing that might happen, I started with the most important place first! The American Folk Art Museum.

They are having a two part special exhibit, of the quilts in their collection. Wow, this is some exhibit. Many skillfully executed quilts from long ago. Some more recent ones, too, including the one that Paula Nadelstern donated to the museum from her exhibit last year. I wasn't sure if photography was allowed, so I didn't take out my camera. Sorry. You can see some photos on their site. It looks like the special exhibit they're having at the Lincoln Square branch is very interesting, but I just didn't have time to get up there. If you're going to be anywhere near NYC during the time of these exhibits, I urge you to make time to go to the museum and/or it's branch. You won't be sorry.

Next stop was M&J Trimmings. There are two shops that I make sure to get to on each and every one of the trips I make to the U.S. M&J is one of them and City Quilter is the other. And, I never leave either one of them without making a purchase. So, here's what I bought at M&J. Such a fun place!

Next stop was Butterfly Fabrics. They have a lot of fancy fabrics, including all kinds of different silks. I went, on recommendation, specifically to see the dupioni silks. There were so many wonderful colors. But, they would only cut a minimum of a yard each. That's a lot for me and I wanted to get a bunch of different colors. I couldn't decide what to do, so I told myself I'll come back a different time. Maybe find out if I could find someone to share it with me. So, I did go back at the end of the next week and this is what I bought. Aren't they gorgeous? I'm going to try to sell some small pieces to help defray the cost.

Yes, I did manage to do lunch somewhere in between. I do all this by foot and I love, love, walking on the streets of Manhattan, but, here is where I got tired, and it's a good thing, because this post is getting too long!

One more thing. A few weeks before I went to the states, I placed an order with Jackie at Canton Village Quilt Works, for a bunch of Kona solids. She usually has them at a good price and they were on sale. Don't they all go great together? You can learn about the sales by subscribing to the newsletter or from Jackie's blog.

Are you noticing a color trend here? I have yet to decide what I'm doing with all this stuff.

Trip - Part 1

I just went to look at my photos of the trip I took to the U.S. last month and, would you believe, I have no photos of anything where I went the first few days! I do have a photo of something I took in my parents house, but that's for later.

For those who don't know, my parents live in New Jersey close to NYC. The first day I was there I took a ride into Brooklyn to do some shopping. It was raining, which is something we're, unfortunately, not used to here in Israel these days. Although it is supposed to be stormy this weekend here. Anyway, on my way into Brooklyn, there was sleet! Hadn't seen that in a while.

Of course, one of my stops was to a quilt shop. I think I may have been to this shop several years ago when it was in a different location. Sew Materialistic is a nice little shop with a nice selection. It's a very busy place! There were a lot of women at a big table in the back and walking around there. It looked like they were there for some one on one instruction and help with works in progress. I had met the owner, Malke, online a few months ago and it was fun to meet her in person. But, I forgot to get a photo! :( The shop also has a blog, and Malke has a blog, Quilting with Malke.

Early last month Thearica of Pigtails and Quilts wrote a post about an item she found at a yard sale. When I saw it, I was excited because a similar item was on a little shelf in my mother's kitchen right near me! I know it as a holder for thread for tatting or crochet lace. It's also called a string holder. My mother's has a hole in the base. In the old days they used to secure it with a screw to the counter in a store and use the string for wrapping up people's purchases. I asked my mother if I could have it, but she said she's not ready just yet to give it up! Thearica asked to see photos of the one my mother has, so here they are.

Sorry to seemingly have ignored you all. Thanks for those who expressed concern. I sure do have a lot of catching up to do. I spent a few weeks in the states during the month of November. I'm slowly straightening life up since I came back. I have a whole bunch of experiences to share from when I was there, with photos, and will start posting them very soon. Meanwhile, check out G6's blog to see the lights at my home here in Jerusalem on the fourth night of Chanukah. Yes, it is a quilty post!

It's the 4th Blogger's Quilt Festival!

We've made it to the 4th Bi-annual Blogger's Quilt Festival. Thanks to Amy of Amy's Creative Side for gathering hundreds of quilters together to show some of their favorite quilts all in one place.

I don't know if any of my regular readers noticed, but I tend to work with mostly brights (the basic colors of the rainbow) in combination with usually black and sometimes white. This time I was going to show you my first crazy quilt piece that I made probably about 15 years ago. It actually looks like an antique because it's dark and dreary and faded. I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Maybe some other time.

So here is what I decided to share this time. The first four pieces pieces are minis, with the fifth being a little larger scale.The sizes are noted below each photo. I use a few of them as mats. I consider all of these together as a set or a series. They are all made of components of Carol Doak's foundation paper piecing blocks. Don't forget, you can click on any photo to enlarge.

Fall into Fall Quilt Bloggers Giveaway

In January 2009, I saw a posting on someone's blog that they were participating in something called the Whirl into Winter Giveaway. So, I went to Debi's blog and that's when I decided that I needed to start a blog because I just had to participate. I joined a little late, but was happy to receive as many comments that I did. That's how I met some of the wonderful bloggers that I keep in touch with still today.

So, here we are again, with Debi's Fall into Fall Giveaway. I'm looking forward to meeting more new bloggers while I go down the list of participants and enter their giveaways. I've held various giveaways over time and it's one of the most fun parts of blogging.

My offering this time is modest, but it is something that I would love to win from someone else. I cut squares from most of my batik fabric collection and added a few more from some of the commercial hand-dyes that I have. Altogether, there are 50 (fifty) 5" squares of colorful fabric.

I'm sure this is the longest I've ever gone without writing. Such a busy month. We're in the middle of the Sukkot holiday and have a big bunch of relatives coming for a BBQ today.

On September 5th, my daughter was ready to go to work in the morning at the hospital she works in, but changed directions and decided to go to the delivery room instead! My third grandchild, second grandson, was born that day. I was supposed to be at the delivery, as I was last time, but they called me too late and I couldn't get there in time. It's a two hour ride. From the hospital, I took home my granddaughter and the others followed two days later. Rosh Hashana followed the next day after that. Then the brit milah and festive meal to celebrate it. The next day they went home and I went with them, until Yom Kippur. A few days after that, they came back for the beginning of the Sukkot holiday. Holiday still going on until the end of this week. Busy enough for you?

I was going to wait until I had quilted this hexagon selvage wallhanging to show it to you, but it's still hanging on my design wall, waiting for me to figure out how to quilt it. I'm really stumped, so would welcome any ideas you have.

Quilting Corner came to visit

A bunch of the ladies from Quilting Corner came this morning to my home, moving their weekly gathering at my invitation. While I am considered a member of the group, I have not had a chance to attend but a few of the gatherings. I was thrilled when they all agreed to travel here. We had a lovely morning of show and tell (all mine!) and it was a pleasure to explain the stories behind many of the pieces that I've made since I started quilting. We also had a very nice time at the bagel shop down the block for lunch.

The gatherings are almost always hosted by Etty in her home in Beitar. The highlight of today's gathering was the presentation to Etty of a quilt initiated by Susan of Scrap Happy. We all made signed blocks, but the quilt was organized, put together, and tied by Susan! Thank you, Susan! It's also Etty's birthday in about a week, so it was perfect timing.

Shawl progress

Yes, I have been lazy about writing on the blog. Be sure you read to the end to find out about Sue's cute giveaway.

I have made some progress on the shawl I mentioned that I bought yarn for a few months ago. It is a bit further along than in the photo below I took a few weeks ago. The pattern doesn't show up as much in the variegated yarn, but I'm still OK with the way it's coming out.

I searched and searched the web for free shawl patterns. I've been collecting back issues of Piecework Magazine and found a PDF of the index of the magazine. I found quite a few shawls there and looked them up, but most of them were using charts. I don't like to knit or crochet with charts. I like the k1 p2 type of instructions.

Another link I found was a directory of tons of knitted shawl patterns. I only managed to get through the first column. Somewhere in the middle I found the one that I decided to make. It's this version of the Candle Flame pattern. In a google search, I also found a small correction to the pattern. It may have been on Ravelry.

I also liked this shawl pattern site. The patterns are sorted according to how much yarn you need for the shawl.

Henya had suggested: "Have you thought about making "Pi are square", by EZ? You can keep on going until the yarn runs out." That was very interesting to me, but, I couldn't find a free version of the pattern that I liked. Now, Wendy of Wendy Knits is showing her progress on a pi shawl she is making. This week she announced that next week she will be starting a knit along of another pi shawl! Wendy Johnson is also the author of Socks From the Toe Up, the book that I got the pattern for the first (and only) pair of socks I made!

BTW, I finally decided to subscribe to Piecework Magazine, but there are still some back issues that I am missing. If any of you have any that you would be willing to sell to me, I would appreciate it. Trying out embroidery with felt

A couple of weeks ago I received a gift of a beautiful applique pattern. After spending some time examining it, I decided that I would like to make it with felt. I have a collection of different colors of felt and thought it would be a good idea to make a practice piece, as I don't remember ever having appliqued with felt before.

Around that time, Jenny of Elefantz started her current BOM, Daisy-Do (see button on my sidebar). The first thing I thought was that it would look good in felt! It was fun to work with and I think it looks great. The rainbow variegated thread I used for the blanket stitch was dyed by me for the big stitch quilting I did on Michael's quilt nine years ago. I also dyed the fabrics for that quilt.

YTRR, Top finished

Last week I finished the top of the YTRR miniquilt. It now measures 14 inches. I plan to take the quilting on this very seriously and very slowly. I'm hoping it will be good for entering into shows.

Time to do some catching up!

I've previously written about the Block Lotto that I've been entering over the past year and a half. This year I haven't participated in most of them, but intend to make the cool blocks for the July Block Lotto. One of the months I did participate in was January. Here are the Tic-tac-toe blocks I made for January.

Because the style of the blocks are wonky, they are usually made larger and then trimmed down to size. When I made the January blocks, I saved all the trimmings. Last week I decided it's time to make something with them. I trimmed all those pieces, to straighten them out, and tried out several different layouts. This is what I finally came up with.

I ironed the strips to a piece of fusible pellon. What I'm going to do with it now, I don't know, but it's hanging on the design wall with a bunch of other small tops. It measures about 7" x 20".

RR comes home!

This week my RR Bloggers quiltlet returned home after over a year making the rounds of the U.S. and England. I am more than thrilled with the way it turned out. I love the colors and all the batik fabrics. All the ladies in the group did a fantastic job. It was a wonderful experience. Click on the photo to enlarge and see the detail.

There were 14 rounds, each with different instructions to follow of size or technique. You can read about my starting block in my blog post from before the Round Robin started. Hooray! A PAIR of socks!

I have finally finished the pair of socks that I started ten months ago! You can see the progress in some of these knitting posts. I don't really see the knitting of another pair of socks in my future, but, you never know.

My next knitting project is going to be a scarf or shawl. A couple of weeks ago I went to the Gourmet Yarn Shop in Ra'anana and, since I'm a sucker for anything in rainbow colors, I couldn't leave without the yarn you see here. (I've never bought from this online shop, just found it through a random search.)

Anyone who buys a skein of Schaefer yarn is entitled to one free pattern and Orly of the Gourmet Yarn Shop suggested that I make the Anne Shoulder Scarf. I am thinking of making it, but I read someplace (that I can't find now) that it doesn't use the whole skein of yarn. I would like to find a free pattern online of a triangular shawl that would use up to the 560 yards of the skein. Any knitters out there have a suggestion? If you are a member of Ravelry, you can see more about the Anne Shoulder Scarf on Ravelry. If anyone has anything else to suggest making from that rainbow fingering yarn, I'm willing to listen.

Blogger's Quilt Festival #3

Welcome to the 3rd Bi-annual Blogger's Quilt Festival, where you can visit the blogs of hundreds of quilters showing off some of their favorite quilts. Thanks to Amy of Amy's Creative Side for providing us with the fun.

This time I would like to share with you a quilt that I made for a special exhibit of my local quilting group. The exhibit took place in December, 2006, at the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens. We had a floral theme and my quilt is named "Spring - Aviv." Aviv is the Hebrew word for Spring.

I wanted to design a quilt to brighten up a certain wall space in my home. Before making the quilt, I made a little test piece, in Journal Quilt size. The full size quilt is 41" x 40" and all the applique is three dimensional, Timtex filled.

Block Lotto

Over a year ago I started participating in the Block Lotto blog. I took a few months off recently. The themes of this year's blocks are a number of very non-traditional, unusual designs. The focus color of this month's blocks is the color lime green and, while you haven't seen much of it in my work, I love anything in lime green. YTRR, the next round

No, I didn't win the EQ7 giveaway for bloggers, but I have ten chances to enter the giveaways of those who did! And, so do you! You can find the list of blogs giving away EQ7 in this EQ post.

I did do something productive in the last few weeks. I've added Round 5 to my miniature YTRR in the Carol Doak Quilting Group. Here you can read the my other posts about the YTRR.

I continued the Unit #33 from the SS9P book from round four into round five. I used Block #229 from the 300 blocks book for the blue and green points. Then I chopped off the yellow corner from round four and added a white corner to cover both rounds.

The piece now measures 12 inches.

That's Electric Quilt 7, the quilt program. For years I kept saying that I don't need a quilt design program. That I can keep doing it on paper. A few months ago I was considering buying a program. It would be either EQ6 or buying an upgrade for a different program that I received an earlier version of from someone. I procrastinated and just let it slide.

Simple block break

While spending much time catching up on non-quilty things, I made two simple quilt blocks for a couple of group quilts. One was a heart block sent to a loved member of a few online groups that I belong to who just lost her husband. Oops, I forgot to take a picture before mailing it!

The other is a sawtooth star block made for a surprise quilt being made for a lady in a local quilt group. I blocked out the identifying details, and I belong to several groups, so it's anybody's guess! It's made of my favorite type of fabric, batiks, and my favorite colors to work with, orange and yellow.

YTRR, continued - Advice needed

Earlier this week the rules for the fourth round of the YTRR in the Carol Doak yahoogroup were revealed. I spent two days printing, cutting, pasting, coloring, photographing and doing it all over again and again. I came up with two versions, but still can't decide.

Below you will find Version 1 and Version 2. I am leaning towards Version 2. Version 1 might be a drop too busy for this round. This round should be a little quieter than the previous ones. Also, I don't know if you can notice, but I tried to design round four with a way to make it easy to work into round five. Hopefully, it will fit with the rules for round five. If not, I will make my own rules!

Please let me know, in the comments section, what you think about version 1 and version 2, and why. I will not have time to do any cutting or sewing until Sunday, anyway.

Yours Truly Round Robin

What is a Yours Truly Round Robin (YTRR)? A round robin is usually a project where one makes a quilt block or other piece of needlework or craft and then sends it to the next person in a group of like minded participants. Each participant adds on one round and sends it on to the next one. The number of rounds usually corresponds with the number of people in the group. When the last round is done, the piece is returned to the original owner. The individual rounds follow a set of rules decided by either the members of the group or the organizer of the whole project.

A YTRR is a round robin where you do all the rounds yourself, thus no need to mail it around. Carol Doak came up with her first YTRR challenge (this is the second) after some members of her Yahoogroup got burned while participating in a 'real' round robin. Carol provides the rules for each round every 3-4 weeks and everyone shares photos of their progress in individual albums dedicated to each round. You do need to be a member of the Carol Doak Quilting Group at yahoogroups in order to participate.

All rounds must include a Carol Doak block design. This includes the free patterns on her website, the MANY free patterns designed especially for the members of the yahoogroup, and the MANY books that Carol has published. Here are the rules for the individual rounds, so far.

Round 1, center block: "Make a center using any number of paper-pieced blocks (my designs) in any size in any number of colors."

For my center block I used the New Year's 2010 block, designed by Carol just for the members of the yahoogroup.

Round 2, border 1: "Should contain only two colors and must include at least one Carol Doak design. You can use different fabrics containing different shades of the two colors, but only two colors should be used in this round. One color fabrics can be solids or tone-on-tones. Or you can use a print fabric that contains only your two colors or shades of your two colors."

For this border, I used the South Carolina block from the 50 Fabulous Paper Pieced Stars book, in regular and mirror image.When I turned the center block on point, I decided that the next round should result in a finish of six inches, otherwise I knew I would get into trouble in subsequent rounds! This resulted in printing out the S.C. block unit foundations in a weird measurement, in order to get it to fit.

Round 3, border 2: "should contain one or more paper-pieced rectangular blocks. Now this round can contain other paper-pieced blocks, however at least one rectangular block should be included. You can put two square blocks together to create a rectangular unit."

For this border I used Unit 19 from the Simply Sensational Nine Patch book, also in regular and mirror image. It is one inch wide. So, the little triangles are approximately 1/4".

In future updates on this project, I will not be posting the rules to the subsequent rounds. You will need to join the Carol Doak Quilting Group to get them!

Here's the piece, so far. Don't forget to enlarge for the detail. It now measures 8" (eight inches) square.

Here's my worksheet. I do not use a quilting program to design my quilts. I printed out the foundations on regular paper, cut out the units, then pasted them to a larger paper. For larger quilts I used graph paper to design a scaled down version, but for minis I design it in the actual size. I color in with markers or pencils, the old fashioned way. You can see that I changed my mind about the colors in round three.

Purim Journal Quilt

Today is the holiday of Purim in Jerusalem. For everywhere else in the world, including most of the rest of Israel, Purim was yesterday. This Wikipedia article gives a pretty good explanation of Purim and its associated customs.

For one of my journal quilts a few years ago, I collected some of the paraphernalia that came with the gift baskets we received that year for Purim and secured it down into a collage with a piece of tulle. (Don't forget to click on the photo to enlarge.)

It's time to announce the two winners of my One World One Heart giveaway!

First a little about how I chose the winners. There were 243 comments of which six of them were duplicates. So, that made 237. I put 237 into a Random Number Generator and it chose the numbers 15 and 81.

I counted down the list of comments, while skipping the second comment of each of the duplicates (I didn't want to delete them.) It wound up being very easy, as there was only one duplicate within the first 81.

Using up some yarn

I've been so lazy about blogging lately. Maybe some of you have some advice to help me with that?

While I've been working a little bit on many different things, I did finish one project! In an attempt to try to use up some of the huge yarn stash that I have from years ago, I joined a Mystery Crochet-a-long. I discovered something I forgot after so many years of only quilting. When I finish the afghan 'top', it's FINISHED! No need to sandwich, quilt or bind it! Only problem is that it doesn't look like there's any less yarn in the cabinets.

It does need to be blocked but, here is the finished product. Each square is a different stitch pattern. It was a lot of fun. You should check out Carolyn's Gourmet Crochet blog.

Red and white baby quilt back again

I recently finished embroidering the rest of the reverse redwork blocks for the red and white baby quilt that I started last year. Here are three of them. There are three more, but they will be a surprise when the quilt is finished.

I have thought about a setting, but am waiting for a book I ordered where the author used a similar setting for a quilt. Instead of figuring out how to do it myself, I may as well follow the instructions in the book. I'll tell you about that another time.

My quilt in a book

The 4th night of Chanukah

I made my Chanukah quilt in 1999. It's been hanging in our living room and every year since then, when the others are lighting their real menorahs, I add a fabric flame to my quilt. It hangs all year with all the flames and right before Chanukah I take them all off to add them back on once a day.

The custom is to place the chanukiah (Chanukah menorah) in a public place, in order to publicize the miracle. Some actually place theirs outdoors. Some place it in a window for passersby to see. The background of my wall hanging is meant to resemble a window.

Here are the last two Journal Quilts that I made in the 2003 series. Next I have to find the images I have for the 2006 Journal Quilts.

Between spending time doing some paperwork, I've been alternating between knitting the second sock of the first pair of socks I've ever knitted and an unusually shaped scarf. The scarf should be done within the next few days and I'll take a picture. I hope these will finally satisfy the knitting urge and I'll be able to get back to my quilting!

2003's Journal Quilt Number 5

A little history. The Journal Quilt concept was started by Jeanne Williamson, author of The Uncommon Quilter, in 1999. Jeanne documented all those quilts on her webite. In 2002, Karey Bresenhan, director of International Quilt Festivals, started the Journal Quilt Project, calling on quilt artists all over the world to make one 8 1/2 x 11 quilt per month, for nine months, in time to show them at the Houston Quilt Festival in the fall.

This continued for five years. For the year 2007, the format changed. Karey called for quilters to make one 17 x 22 (the size of 4 letter size pages) using techniques found in the book Creative Quilting, The Journal Quilt Project. In 2006, Karey chose over 400 journal quilts from the first five years of the project and compiled them into the Creative Quilting book. For the last year of the project, 2008, the quilts were juried. I wrote about mine in this blog post. Go to the Quiltart site and scroll down for links to each year of the Journal Quilts.
I also had a Journal Quilt in the 2007 exhibit and made a series for the 2006 exhibit, one of which is in the Creative Quilting book. More about those little quilts in future blog posts.

We recently had some painting done in the house, which included the kitchen. I made my first quilt 15 years ago and it’s been hanging on the kitchen wall since then. When we put all the things back up on the walls, I decided to raise that quilt and add the row below it of the journal quilts that I made for the 2003 Houston show. My plan is to share close-ups of one or two of the quilts every couple of days.

I just realized that it’s already been two weeks since I posted! Too long. I don’t have any progress to show on anything from the past few weeks, so I dug around and decided to show you the quilt where my banner comes from.
In 2005, I took the Firework’s workshop with Helen Marshall at Quilt University. I made a smaller version of the class project, with the intention of using it as the center of a round robin in the IJQ quilting group that I belong to.
Every year Quilt University has a virtual quilt show of students’ works made from QU classes that they took. I entered this quilt in 2007 and it won an Honorable Mention in it’s category.

Blogger’s Quilt Festival II

Today is the start of the Blogger’s Quilt Festival. Amy of Park City Girl started it last spring to coincide with the Chicago Quilt Market and Festival event. This one coincides with the Houston Quilt Market and Festival.

Blogger’s participating are sharing the story of one of their favorite quilts. Last time I shared this one. Here’s the one I’d like to show you this time.

It’s a mini quilt that I made using one of the foundation paper piecing blocks that Carol Doak designs especially for the members of her yahoogroup, the CarolDoakQuiltingGroup. The quilt is 12 x 12 and it’s my own design. A couple of years ago, Carol was writing an article for Quilter’s Newsletter and mentioned that the magazine was looking for photos of quilts made using her block designs. Carol collected and sent to QNM the photos that some of us sent her and they chose mine as one of the quilts for the article. The quilt is called “Compass Celebration” and the article is in the September/October 2008 issue of Quilter’s Newsletter.

I haven’t had much current work to share lately, so I’ll show you a quilt from a couple of years ago. It’s using my favorite shape and I made it for the Grab Bag Quilt Challenge run by Tomme of the Quiltart list. Each participant mailed a baggie full of fabric and supplies to Tomme and she mixed them up and sent them out again. No one knew who they were making the quilt for until after they were all finished and mailed back to Tomme. Here is the quilt that I made for Elizabeth in Ohio. I’ve officially knitted my first sock

I really finished this last week but just got around to photographing it. I’m hoping to start the next one sometime this week, just to prove that I don’t have second sock syndrome. I really plan to wear these in the winter. (Just around the house.)

I spent some time this week doing paperwork, so I don’t have anything creative to share. On Sunday, we’re going to the Second International Jewish Bloggers Convention. I hope to learn more about how to be a good blogger and get to meet a bunch of people whose blogs I read.

Lastly, in July I wrote about meeting Annie Smith of podcast fame (and she’s a popular California quilting teacher.) In her recent podcast she talks a little about our meeting, towards the end of the podcast. There are a few minor inaccuracies (we really didn’t have much time to talk leisurely, so some things may have been misunderstood) but I must correct one thing! So far, I have two grandchildren and not five. Hopefully, I will have many, many more. Just nothing on the horizon yet, that I know of.

A little doodling

First about the sock. I finished it and am now in the process of undoing the binding because it is too tight! I tried to do it loosely, but I guess it wasn’t loose enough. I’m going to use larger needles when I do it again. Only problem is, I suspect it won’t be tight enough this time and the socks will fall down my leg!

Several years ago I took a course at Quilt University by Raymond Houston on his Symmetry design techniques. Recently he started a new blog for his work and a new mailing list, called NGQ Tile Addicts, for people who like to play with his symmetry design tiles. He gives you a set of his tiles to print out in regular and mirror image. Join the group to see what it’s all about. It’s really fun.

I’m up to the ribbing on my sock! But, I don’t have time right now to work on it. I need to do the next round on the RRBloggers round robin so that I could mail it on time. Sock progress

My slow progress on the socks is keeping me from working on any of my other projects. I really have to get back to the redwork baby quilt, while my granddaughter is still a baby. So, here’s the sock, so far.

Did you really think I was going to show you a side view of the sock? Maybe the second one, if it will look any better than this one. I just hope I don’t come down with Second Sock Syndrome!

How do you hold your yarn?

Recently, Ann, of the Bella Crochet blog, had a post discussing how people hold their yarn or thread when they are crocheting. I do it differently than Ann and thought I’d share a photo of my hand, just like she did. It would be interesting to see how others do it.

I learned to knit and crochet from my grandmother when I was about six or seven years old. I am right handed and I hold it the same for crocheting and for knitting. Some people may do it differently for each.

I recently saw a video on youtube that, if I remember correctly, showed this way of holding the yarn and holding the needle(s) the same way that I do. The demonstrator said that this puts the least stress on the hands and fingers of all the different methods. Unfortunately, I didn’t save that youtube URL and there are so many knitting videos on youtube!

The Big Catchup – Where I’ve been, who I’ve met – Part 2

Continuing from Part 1, that same day I had also been to M & J Trimming on 6th Ave., the best trimmings store in the world. I bought a 1/2 yard piece of a wide machine embroidered ribbon that I think is amazing. I also bought a yard each of one inch wide metallic bias tape. I loved the colors!

On Friday of that week, June 19th, Annie Smith and I had made up to meet before the class she was teaching at the Aardvark Quilt Shop in New Jersey . It was a thrill to meet her and we had a very nice little talk . Then, of course, I had to buy some fabric! Here’s Annie and me and the fabric I bought.

The next several days were taken up with family stuff and travelling (down to Miami Beach), but on Wednesday, the 24th, I met up with Judy Momenzadeh, who I met through the Quiltart mailing list. She works very part-time at The Quilt Scene quilt shop and that’s where we met. Judy is one of the members of the group that had the exhibit I went to see on my last trip to Miami in March. She wasn’t working that day, but she graciously cut my fabric choices for me. We had a lovely time getting to know each other while walking around the quilt shop. She brought her fantastic, most recently finished, art quilt to show me. I brought the only thing I had with me on vacation, the redwork blocks, and I stole my grandson’s quilt for the day to show, too. Here’s Judy and me and the fabrics that I bought.

The next week was spent with more family. A wedding in Miami Beach and more travelling to get to another wedding in Los Angeles. We were in California for just three days before heading home, one day in L.A. and two in Irvine. So, there was no time for quilt shops. But, while in Irvine we spent an afternoon with family at the Sawdust Art Festival in Laguna Beach. There wasn’t much in the way of textiles, though. There were a few booths with clothing related items. One booth did have lovely quilted jackets. I took one photo of a piece of artwork. It grabbed me because it has the look of applique, but it’s glass! The Festival continues until August 30.

Still trying to catch up, I’m way behind in reading emails and blogs. Quilting related, all I managed to get done were blocks for the Block Lotto blog and hexagons for the Pot Luck of The Great Hexagon Quilt Along blog. As of this writing, I have not had the chance to post my entries on those blogs, so I’ll show them here. They’re both traditional, relaxing type, quilting projects, which is what I needed right now.

Where I’ve been, who I’ve met – Part 1

I’m going to start catching up here a little bit at a time. Last Wednesday, the 17th, I went to the American Folk Art Museum to see the Paula Nadelstern exhibit. Seeing her work up close, in real life, was a thrill. Every quilt is amazing. If you are going to be anywhere in the vicinity of NYC during the next few months, you should do whatever you have to do to make sure you get to see this exhibit. It’s open thru September 13. They also have a table with a bunch of fancy real kaleidoscopes that you can play with. It was a lot of fun.

In the afternoon, I met up with Henya of Chicken Stitches at the Lion Brand Yarn Studio. We sat for about an hour talking life and knitting. I showed her my redwork embroidery and she showed me a few knitting and crocheting projects she is working on. Henya also advised me on how to go about making my first pair of socks and which yarn to buy. I had bought the book Socks from the Toe Up by Wendy Johnson, the day before and we went through it to decide which are the easiest toe and heel to start with. Here’s the yarn I bought to make the socks.

When Henya first came in she took out a little plastic bag with some wonderful little gifts for me. First there was two skeins of a beautiful yarn from Russia. It really is from Russia, the label is all in Russian!

Then Henya took out some of her stitch markers she brought for me that she sells in her Etsy store! Here are the adorable little things.

It was fun to meet Henya. She’s such a nice person. You can see that when you read her blog. Here’s a picture of us in front of lots of colorful yarns.
